Brenna's 1st Gymnastics Recital

Last night was Brenna's 1st gymnastics recital. She had a great time, even more fun that regular classes. It's amazing how far she's come in just 8 short months. She really is a natural and enjoys it so much.

The recital was alittle different than most. The recital had a jungle theme and was titled "Westwood Goes Wild". They set the kids up in groups of five. We rotated to each apparatus, spending about 10 - 15 minutes at each spot as they performed the circuit associate with that apparatus.

We started off at "Westwood Mountain" which is a play area for the kids to let loose any way they please. It's equipped with a rock wall, foam pit, a tunnel, 6 slides, and a fire pole! The coach lined all the kids up before letting them hit the mountain. He asked Brenna "What do we do on the Mountain?" to which Brenna replied "We play like on the playground!" I though it was a proud moment!

Next was the Bars. This is Brenna's strongest apparatus. She did the Butterfly Hold and a Push Up and Over on the single bar, and she did the Bear Crawl across the parallel bars.

After the Bars, we were off to the trampoline. Without a doubt all the kids have more fun here than on any of the other stations. Brenna's great at Straddle Jumps, Tucks, and Seat Drops. She can bounce with the best of em'!

On to floor exercises! This circuit was tough to complete with kart wheel, hand stand, pencil rolls, donkey kicks, back flips, and front flips. And, in case your wondering about all the terminology, "Yes" Brenna does indeed know what each move is called. Brenna's an old pro and really showed us how it was done.

Next up, Balance Beam! While Brenna still gets alittle wobbly and takes a tumble every now and then, overall she's learned to manage her balance great!

Time for the big Vault! In regular classes we normally vault on to a gym mat, but for recital they did something really special. The kids vaulted into the foam pit. In Brenna's case it wasn't so much of a vault into the foam pit as it was a quick run to the vault, pause, and then jump into the foam pit! She did great through, some kids wouldn't even try.

Our last rotation was tumbling. Brenna always enjoys this circuit. She enjoyed it so much she made her way through the circuit at least 3 times before the rotation ended.

Vaulted front flip!

And finally we made our way to the awards ceremony. Brenna was very excited to get her trophy. She waited patiently as other names where called ahead of hers. Finally when Coach Stephanie called her name, Brenna jumped up and ran to the podium, climbed up the stairs, took her trophy and held it high! She was too cute!

We all had a great time and we're very thankful she got to take part in the recital, given that a week ago she couldn't walk. It's amazing how resilient children are and we thank God for the speedy recovery. We also had professional pictures done at the recital (this place really knows how to bleed a pocket book!) that should be back in about 2 weeks, so we'll post those when they come along.
